WIAC Basketball Update: Games on February 4

Saturday's slate includes #4 River Falls hosting 3rd-place Oshkosh and #25 Whitewater battling Stout in men's basketball.

WIAC Tournament Seeding Update

As of today, the WIAC Tournament would be (1) River Falls 9-0, (2) Whitewater 6-3, (3) Oshkosh 5-4, (4) Eau Claire 5-4, (5) Stout 4-5, (6) La Crosse 2-7. (6) plays at (3) and (5) plays at (4) in the opening round, with the highest seed remaining playing at (2) and the lowest seed remaining playing at (1) in the semifinals. The highest seed hosts the WIAC Championship for an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

*In Men's Basketball, Stevens Point is under a postseason ban, so they won't participate in the WIAC Tournament. However, their season results do count in tie-breaking scenarios.

Oshkosh, Eau Claire tied at 5-4

-First tiebreaker is head-to-head. Oshkosh is 2-0 against Eau Claire, so Oshkosh becomes the third seed and Eau Claire becomes fourth seed.

Stout, Stevens Point tied at 4-5

-First tiebreaker is head-to-head. Stevens Point is 1-0 against Stout. However, Stevens Point is not participating in the WIAC Tournament, so Stout remains the fifth seed.

WIAC Tournament Seeding Update

As of today, the WIAC Tournament would be (1) Whitewater 8-1, (2) Oshkosh 8-1, (3) Stevens Point 5-4, (4) La Crosse 5-4, (5) Eau Claire 5-4, (6) Stout 2-7. (6) plays at (3) and (5) plays at (4) in the opening round, with the highest seed remaining playing at (2) and the lowest seed remaining playing at (1) in the semifinals. Whitewater, Oshkosh tied at 8-1

-The first tiebreaker is head-to-head. Whitewater is 1-0 against Oshkosh (second meeting is 2/15). Whitewater is the number one seed and Oshkosh the number two.

Stevens Point Eau Claire, La Crosse tied at 5-4

-The first tiebreaker is head-to-head among all tied teams. Since each team is 1-1 against the others, the second tiebreaker is cumulative record against teams higher in the standings. Stevens Point is 1-2 against Whitewater and Oshkosh, while Eau Claire and La Crosse are both 0-3 (although La Crosse dropped two of those in overtime). So, Stevens Point would become the third seed.

-We revert back to the head-to-head tiebreaker for Eau Claire and La Crosse. La Crosse is 1-0 against Eau Claire, so they would be the fourth seed. Eau Claire would be the fifth seed. The teams meet again on 2/11.

Stout, Platteville tied at 2-7

-The first tiebreaker is head-to-head. Stout is 2-0 against Platteville, so Stout is the sixth seed while Platteville is in seventh place.

Men's Basketball at River Falls (5pm): #4 River Falls (18-1, 9-0) will have to handle an upstart Oshkosh (13-7, 5-4) squad that is just a game out of a WIAC Tournament bye. River Falls won the first meeting by 22.

Women's Basketball at Oshkosh (3pm): #16 Oshkosh (18-2, 8-1) will look to extend its four-game winning streak that began with a win over River Falls (6-14, 1-8). The Falcons are one game back of a WIAC Tournament spot.

Men's Basketball at Whitewater (5pm): #21 Whitewater (17-3, 6-3) started 0-3 in conference play, but have since reeled off six straight wins. One of those wins was over Stout (13-7, 4-5), just a few weeks removed from receiving votes in the Top 25 poll and coming off their best-ever shooting percentage night in a loss to Eau Claire on Wednesday.

Women's Basketball at Stout (3pm) #19 Whitewater (18-2, 8-1) won by 11 over Stout (6-14, 2-7) in the first match-up. The Warhawks face Stevens Point next, the only team to defeat them in conference play.

Men's Basketball at Eau Claire (5pm): #25 Eau Claire (15-5, 5-4) has been up-and-down all season, while Stevens Point (10-9, 4-5) has been a tough out in conference games. The Pointers blew out the Blugolds by 20 on 1/21.

Women's Basketball at Stevens Point (3pm): #RV Stevens Point (13-7, 5-4) lost a tough game against Oshkosh on Wednesday, and now look to sweep the season series against Eau Claire (11-9, 5-4).

Men's Basketball at La Crosse (5pm): The winner of this game will be in position for the final seed in the WIAC Tournament. La Crosse (10-10, 2-7) won the first meeting, and can all but clinch a spot in the tournament with a win. Platteville (8-12, 1-8) can force a tie for the final spot with a victory.

Women's Basketball at Platteville (3pm): La Crosse (11-9, 5-4) looks to keep a hold on their current fourth seed and home WIAC Tournament playoff spot,  but they'll have to fend off a challenge from Platteville (6-14, 2-7). La Crosse won the first meeting by 15.
