The 2020 Olympic Games are in serious danger of being postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the International Olympic Committee having given itself a month to make a decision.
The IOC has set itself a deadline of four more weeks to consider a postponement after it held an executive board meeting on Sunday afternoon and ruled out a cancellation.
The options - which include scaling back the Games or holding them behind closed doors - would be debated by the organising committee at the end of March, the official said.
An IOC statement read: 'These scenarios relate to modifying existing operational plans for the Games to go ahead on 24 July 2020, and also for changes to the start date of the Games.
'This step will allow better visibility of the rapidly changing development of the health situation around the world and in Japan. It will serve as the basis for the best decision in the interest of the athletes and everyone else involved.'
The news comes amid mounting criticism of its stance by athletes and national Olympic committees, with Japanese officials and International Olympics chief Thomas Bach having long been insistent that their Games will go ahead on July 24, despite the ever escalating crisis.
