‘Jimmy Butler Isn't a Star’: Doug Gottlieb Denies Butler as a Top 15 Player

Doug Gottlieb: “The Heat are devoid of a cheat code. No matter what you want to say about the Heat’s culture, you still have to have a guy who can get you a bucket, can get to a free throw line, or create shots for other people as well. While Jimmy Butler is a really, really good player, at the start of this series he had one great game and some anointed him as a potential ‘top 5’ player in the NBA. C’mon, the top 5 players in the NBA are guys that when they have this much attention defensively they find ways to either do it themselves or get the help of others. Jimmy had 41, then he had 29, then he had 8, 6, and 13. I know that Game 3 was when the knee injury flailed up and he only played 20 minutes, but let’s just call it like it is – you have to have a guy who can just win a game for you, or keep you in a game until everybody hits shot, or can carry a team on the offensive side. All the other top 5, top 10, top 15 guys in the NBA, that’s the skillset they have. Don’t get me wrong, defense is absolutely important, culture is important, and in terms of leadership, Jimmy is great, but he’s not a superstar, he’s not necessarily even your own star. He’s not your go-to guy if you want to win a championship. There’s a reason that at this level the best of the best emerge, and Jimmy is not that guy. There’s nothing wrong with how good of a player he is, but the best of the best can carry a team when nobody else can make a shot and that’s what Miami is lacking. Jimmy Butler is a really good player, but let’s not kid ourselves going ‘he’s one of the best 10 or 15 players in the NBA.’ No, he’s not, he’s a really, really good player.” (Full Video Above)

Listen to Doug Gottlieb explain why he has a problem with NBA fans and the media alike proclaiming Jimmy Butler as a ‘star’ in these NBA Playoffs, as Gottlieb doesn’t even think Butler would rank among the top 15 players in the NBA.

Check out the segment above as Gottlieb details why Butler, although one of the most well-respected leaders and potent two-way players in the league, isn’t on the top line of the game’s most coveted players.
