Badgers run ends in Indianapolis

The Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball season ended Sunday at Hinkle Fieldhouse with a 76-63 loss to top-seeded Baylor.

Wisconsin jumped out to leads of 5-0 and 7-2 in the early going, but faltered as the first half went on, with Baylor closing out the final 13 minutes of the first half with a 31-18 run to take a 42-29 lead into the intermission.

The Badgers played the Bears to a 34-34 draw in the second half but were not able to overcome three Baylor players scoring 16-plus points. Matthew Mayer led all scorers with 17 points while teammates Davion Mitchell and Jared Butler each chipped in 16.

Wisconsin was led by D’Mitrik Trice’s 12 points, but he struggled from the field, making just 5 of his 17 shot attempts (2-8 from the three-point line).

The Badgers end their season 18-13 (10-10 Big Ten) and face the potential losses of all six of their most experienced players to graduation, although the NCAA is allowing for an extra year of eligibility because of how COVID affected winter sports student-athlete’s careers.
