Rarely does one inning cost a team a baseball game, but that was the case for the Brewers on Tuesday night in their 5-3 loss to the Pirates.
It was a pitching duel through five innings. Corbin Burnes had given up just two hits and Bryse Wilson was cruising for Pittsburgh. Then the sixth inning began.
The Brewers hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Willy Adames and Rowdy Tellez hit their 21st home runs of the season. Kolten Wong hit a solo home run later in the inning to extend the Brewers’ lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Corbin Burnes allowed the Pirates to get right back in it. Oneil Cruz hit a three-run home run to tie the game. At this point, Brad Boxberger relieved Corbin Burnes. The Pirates would score two more runs, aided by Brewers errors, to extend the lead to 5-3 after six innings. Neither team scored again.
The Brewers have lost two games in a row. The second game of the three-game series in Pittsburgh will be Wednesday night at 6:05pm at PNC Park.
