The Brewers bats came alive early on Saturday afternoon en route to a 5-4 win over the Blue Jays at American Family Field.
The Brewers scored in the first inning on a two out RBI single by Tyrone Taylor to take a 1-0 lead. Blue Jays starter, Yusei Kikuchi threw 39 pitches in the first inning, which led to his short day on the mound. He finished with just two innings pitched and five runs given up, however just two were earned runs.
In the second inning, the Brewers tacked on three more runs. Willy Adames hit an RBI single to score Keston Huira. That was followed by an Andrew McCutchen two run home run to extend the lead to 4-0. It was McCutchen’s sixth home run of the season.
In the third inning, the Brewers scored on a solo home run by Mike Brosseau, his first home run since May 24th and his fourth of the season. That gave the Brewers a 5-0 lead after three innings.
That score held up until the Blue Jays got on the board in the fifth inning. Matt Chapman hit his tenth home run of the season off of Corbin Burnes. Later in the inning, an RBI ground out by Cavan Biggio scored Gurriel Jr. from third base and that cut the deficit for Toronto to 5-2. Corbin Burnes was not pleased with himself after the fifth inning, yelling into his glove in disgust as he walked off the mound.
However, Burnes would bounce back. He became the first Brewers pitcher this season to work into the 8th inning. In the 8th inning, he gave up a home run to Bo Bichette to make it a 5-3 game, in favor of the Brewers. Burnes exited after an infield single by Guerrero Jr., but Devin Williams came in and struck out Alejandro Kirk to end the inning.
Corbin Burnes finished with nine strikeouts and three earned runs given up over just shy of eight innings.
Josh Hader gave up a rare run in the 9th inning, but the Brewers held on for the 5-4 win.
The Brewers will try to take the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:10pm at American Family Field before hitting the road for a five-game road trip.
