The Brewers showed a little more life on offense on Wednesday night, but it wasn’t enough as the Cardinals earned the 5-4 win at American Family Field.
The scoring started in the first inning when the Cardinals scored two runs on a home run by Paul Goldschmidt. The Cardinals and Brewers have played each other eleven times this season, and the team that scores first has won every game.
The Brewers answered back in the bottom of the first inning when Rowdy Tellez hit his first home run since May 29th to cut the deficit in half.
Eric Lauer started for the Brewers on Wednesday night and settled in nicely in the second and third innings. However, in the fourth inning, Albert Pujols extended the lead for the Cardinals with a sacrifice fly that scored Nolan Arenado from third base. The Brewers again answered back in the bottom of the fourth on an Andrew McCutchen solo home run to make it 3-2 in favor of St. Louis.
The Brewers took their first lead of the night in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Christian Yelich and Andrew McCutchen each hit RBI doubles to give the Brewers a 4-3 lead. That lead didn’t last long.
Nolan Arenado hit a two-run home run to left field in the top of the sixth inning to give the Cardinals the lead back, 5-4.
Eric Lauer exited after six innings and gave up five earned runs in the outing.
The Brewers were held scoreless the rest of the night. They are now 1 for 20 with runners in scoring position in the series.
The Brewers will go for the series split on Thursday afternoon at 1:10pm at American Family Field.
