Brewers Strike Early And Hold On For 4-3 Win Over Cardinals

The Brewers struck early against Adam Wainwright and were able to make it stick, holding on for a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The scoring got started quickly as Luis Urias crushed a one out solo home run in the first inning to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead. Andrew McCutchen and Rowdy Tellez followed with singles and then Tyrone Taylor singled home McCutchen to make it a 2-0 lead.

Eric Lauer would surrender that lead in the bottom half of the first and the game was tied at 2 heading into the second inning. Christian Yelich would give the Brewers the lead right back with an RBI single to make it 3-2. In the 4th, Andrew McCutchen added an important insurance run with an RBI single of his own to make it 4-2 Brewers.

In the 7th, facing Trevor Gott, Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo home run to pull the Cardinals within one, but that was as close as they got as Brad Boxberger and Josh Hader shut things down in the final two innings to secure the victory.

Lauer went just five innings, scattering four hits and two runs, but with four walks and just one strikeout on 96 pitches. He gets the win and improves to 5-1, Wainwright takes the loss and drops to 5-4, and Hader secured his 16th save of the year.

Friday, it'll be Brandon Woodruff (5-2, 4.76 ERA) vs. Dakota Hudson (3-2, 3.60 ERA) as the pitching matchup as the Brewers look to secure their fourth straight victory.
