Packers Pull Out Gutsy 24-21 Win Over Cardinals In Dramatic Fashion

It's never easy when you're a fan of the Green Bay Packers. With the Packers entering this game without their top 3 wide receivers available to play and numerous other injuries impacting the roster, Green Bay went into Arizona and defeated the previously undefeated Arizona Cardinals 24-21.

Arizona got the scoring started in the first quarter with Chase Edmonds running 11 yards into the endzone for Arizona to take a 7-0 lead, but the Packers answered right back with a 14 play, 75 yard drive that took up 8:23 of game clock and culminated in a 2 yard TD run from Aaron Jones.

There were plenty of missed opportunities for the Packers along the way in that first half, with Green Bay taking a 10-7 into halftime.

In the second half, after a Henry Black interception of Kyler Murray gave the Packers a short field, Randall Cobb caught his first of two touchdown receptions on the night to give Green Bay a 17-7 lead. Four straight possessions ending in a touchdown later, the Packers hold a 24-21 lead over the Cardinals in the fourth quarter. They get the ball with just under 11 minutes left in the game.

Green Bay goes on a 74 yard drive, and it looked initially like Aaron Jones had reached the endzone, but a replay review overturned the call on the field and the Packers had a few more chances to get into the endzone from the 1 yard line with just under 5 minutes to go. After another rushing attempt that was stopped, a Delay of Game penalty pushed the Packers back to the 5 yard line. On the ensuing 3rd down, Rodgers scrambled and tried to get it in himself, but fell just short at the 1 yard line.

Opting to go for it on 4th down, Rodgers' attempted pass was batted down by Arizona's Devon Kennard. The Packers walked away with no points on that 13 play, 74 yard drive that ate up 7:22 of clock.

Arizona had a chance to drive to win it, but they had a long way to go. The first play from scrimmage on Arizona's final drive nearly went down for a safety, but Chase Edmonds was just barely able to get back to the line of scrimmage. A couple of big chunk plays later with Rasul Douglas getting burned by AJ Green, and Arizona was in field goal range. They continued the drive and with 0:15 left on the clock on 2nd and Goal from the 5, Kyler Murray was looking to Green again, but Green wasn't looking for the ball. However, Rasul Douglas was, and he was able to make the interception in the endzone to secure a Packers victory.

Aaron Rodgers completed 22 of 37 pass attempts for 184 yards and 2 touchdowns. Aaron Jones was the Packers leading receiver, making 7 catches for 51 yards with Randall Cobb adding 3 catches for just 15 yards, but 2 TDs. AJ Dillon led the way on the ground, carrying the ball 16 times for 78 yards.

This was a huge win for the Packers, facing an undefeated Cardinals team without several of their top players and losing others mid-game, such as Robert Tonyan and Kylin Hill. There were a number of missed opportunities for the Packers and while it looked for a moment that those mistakes could cost them the game, one of the mid-season veteran pickups in Rasul Douglas saves the day.

Green Bay improves to 7-1 on the season and will have a long week of rest before their Week 9 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.
