A popular product used by many people fighting off congestion from sickness or allergies has been recalled from stores around the country, including Wisconsin, due to posing a potentially "life-threatening" risk.
Ascent Consumer Products Inc. issued a voluntary recall of one lot of its SinuCleanse Soft Tip Squeeze Bottle Nasal Wash System due to a microbial contamination of the product with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus)," according to a recall notice shared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration on Tuesday (February 25).
Nasal wash and irrigation systems are often used to combat congestion as a way to clear out mucus from nasal passages and temporarily relieve symptoms associated allergies, cold, flu and sinusitis. According to a risk statement from by the company, use of the recalled product could result in infections like endocarditis, meningitis, bacterial sinusitis and other infections that are "serious and potentially life-threatening."
The affected product, which was distributed nationwide in January 2025 via retail stores and online, has a lot number of 024122661A1 and expiration date of 12-31-2027. The packaged product includes a squeeze bottle and 30 saline packets.
There have been no reports of adverse effects as of time of the recall, but consumers are urged to stop use immediately and either throw it out or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
