Gov. Evers: Trump Lawsuit A 'Shocking And Outrageous Assault On Democracy'

Gov. Tony Evers deemed President Donald Trump’s efforts to throw out ballots from two Wisconsin counties an “assault on democracy.”

That’s according to Wisconsin Supreme Court filings Tuesday (December 1).

Trump is challenging more than 210,000 ballots in Milwaukee and Dane counties, where Democratic challenger Joe Biden won, and ultimately won the state, the Associated Press reported Wednesday (December 2).

“President Trump’s (lawsuit) seeks nothing less than to overturn the will of nearly 3.3 million Wisconsin voters,” Evers’ attorneys said, calling the move “a shocking and outrageous assault on democracy.”

“He is simply trying to seize Wisconsin’s electoral votes, even though he lost the statewide election,” the attorneys continued.

The governor believes there’s no legal reason to toss any of the ballots, according to the AP.

The Trump campaign’s lawsuit argues that absentee ballots requested without a written application should not be counted, though voters had the option to request ballots online.

Had the Trump campaign requested a statewide recount, it would have cost about $7.9 million.

The recount yielded hundreds of unopened ballots in Milwaukee last week.

Executive Director for the Milwaukee Election Commission Claire Woodall-Vogg explained at that time that it likely happened because of "human error on Election Day."
