Wisconsin Recount Finds Hundreds Of Unopened Ballots, Officials Say

President Donald Trump’s recount that’s underway in two Wisconsin counties yielded hundreds of unopened ballots.

Officials found 386 unopened ballots in a Milwaukee neighborhood Tuesday morning (November 24) during the recount, according to NBC26.

Executive Director for the Milwaukee Election Commission Claire Woodall-Vogg explained that it likely happened because of "human error on Election Day."

"All of the unopened ballots were on the bottom, with all of the open certificate envelopes on top," she said. "And knowing how thorough we are at Central Count, I have no doubt that they brought these ballots up to the table saying that they were complete, not indicating to anyone that half of the ward was missing."

Woodall-Vogg said that a “positive” effect of the recount was ensuring “that every vote is indeed being counted,” including the nearly 400 unopened ballots uncovered in Milwaukee.

Last week, the Trump campaign said it wanted to toss thousands of Wisconsin ballots, the Associated Press reported Friday (November 20).

“Our democracy depends on fair and impartial elections that fully adhere to the Constitution and state statute," the campaign said in a statement. "By staging a last minute attempt to change the rules, and by providing unlawful advice before then, the Wisconsin Elections Commission has repeatedly failed to follow the law. They have disenfranchised voters and undermined the integrity of this election. We continue to be confident that when all of the legal ballots are counted and illegal ballots are not counted, President Trump will be proven the winner.”

Although it was not immediately clear how the 386 ballots recovered during the recount Tuesday would impact results, Woodall-Vogg said it’s possible they “could help Donald Trump.”
