Rodgers out Friday, but gives kids thrill of a lifetime instead

GREEN BAY – Thursday, the Packers held their final practice before flying to Northern California for Friday night’s preseason opener against the San Francisco 49ers.

It had already been announced that Jordan Love would get the start at quarterback for Aaron Rodgers, who has not taken a preseason snap since 2018. Love will get the bulk of the reps behind center, with Danny Etling also seeing duty.

But the list of inactives don’t end with Rodgers. Also, on the “not expected to play” list are veterans De’Vondre Campbell, Kenny Clark, Randall Cobb, A.J. Dillon, Aaron Jones, Darnell Savage, Rashan Gary, Jaire Alexander, and others.

Certainly, the spotlight on Friday night will be on Love in his first extended play since last Nov. 7 when Rodgers was out with COVID. By all accounts, this has been by far the best camp the third year first-round pick has had.

“I think he’s much more in rhythm,” LaFleur said of Love’s camp practices. “I think there’s more decisiveness. I think you see it in his footwork, and he’s not getting what I call ‘stuck at the top of the drop,’ where both feet are hitting at the same time and he’s just kind of sitting there. It just looks more rhythmical, just looks more fluid and I think it’s translated in his play.

Wednesday at practice, the Packers offense was once again outpaced by the defense, the capper was when Aaron Rodgers was intercepted by Vernon Miller in the 2-minute drill. Earlier, Rodgers threw an interception to safety Shawn Davis after the ball went off the hands of rookie wide receiver Romeo Doubs.

Rodgers’ finest moment came after practice, when a group of kids from the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County were taking a tour of Lambeau Field. When the kids were shown the giant mural of the Packers locker room outside of the team’s media auditorium, a familiar voice from the back asked, “do you know where Aaron Rodgers’ locker is?”

It was Rodgers himself, who spent a few moments meeting the understandingly dumbfounded kids and poising for a picture with them before heading inside the adjacent auditorium for a media obligation.
