GREEN BAY – Rookie wide receiver Romeo Doubs is making everyone watching Packers practice at Ray Nitschke Field stand up and take notice.
But maybe punt returns just aren’t his thing. Actually, judging by the showing of any of Rich Bisaccia’s hopeful punt return specialists, it might not be the Packers thing as a whole.
Just kidding…sort of. After all, it was just one day of practice less than a week into workouts. But be it Doubs, Amari Rodgers, Ishmael Hyman, or frankly anyone else Bisaccia put back there during drills on Tuesday, it was a mess. Professionals simply must be more proficient at catching punts than fans at halftime trying to win a $100 gas card on the jumbotron.
In the immortal words of former coach Mike McCarthy, “that’ll have to get cleaned up.”
The flip side is that Doubs continues to shine in competitive team drills, catching difficult pass after difficult pass. For that matter, Amari Rodgers seems far more confident in his pass catching abilities in the offense as well.
Tuesday was also the day where the pads came on and one-on-one matchups were run, offensive lineman against defensive lineman in the pass rush drill.
Among the highlights: Yosh Nijman defeating Rashan Gary, Jon Runyan defeating Devonte Wyatt, Sean Rhyan defeating Jarran Reed, and Cole Van Lanen defeating La’Darius Hamilton.
Another highlight of the day that drew applause from the crowd was Jordan Love’s near-perfect pass in the back right corner of the end zone to Doubs, who made the completion despite drawing a flag for pass interference on cornerback Rico Gaffney.
Wednesday’s workout will be just a light jog-through. The practice session will be closed to the public, but open to the media.
